Plan your participation

Start with context, then agree the information and decisions needed at each stage.

Name the occasion

Describe the competition or practice setting, the expected format and your current experience. Include the time limit and whether the task is prepared, impromptu or responsive. A clear occasion makes the preparation more useful than a general request to speak better.

Choose a practice focus

Select one or two priorities for the next session. Argument structure and delivery can support each other, but they are different questions. Agreeing a focus helps the coach and listener give feedback that the speaker can actually use.

Stopwatch and blank speaking notes

Agree the meeting details

Discuss group participation, coaching, preferred timings in IST and the material to prepare. Membership arrangements, attendance and any applicable session terms are confirmed in that conversation rather than inferred from the website.

Rehearse, listen, revise

Try a short passage, hear the listener's account of what landed and revise with a clear intention. Keep a note of the change being tested. A second attempt is useful when it answers a question rather than merely repeating the first.

Bring your next speaking challenge

Describe the event, the speaking format and the aspect you want to practise.
